About BCRFM

Ballina Community Radio Granted New License

Get ready to turn the dial, BCRFM has been awarded a second 100 day license!

The new license will come into effect on Saturday 26th September and will run until the 5th September 2021. This will once again allow the station to broadcast on Saturdays and Sundays from 9.30am till 11pm on 101.9 FM, throughout Ballina and its surrounding areas. The station will also continue to stream all shows on-line and on bcrfm.ie, as well as on the TuneIn app for smart devices and phones.

The station would like to acknowledge the continued support of local businesses in their sponsorship of show programming. Without the option to fundraise due to Covid-19 the overheads arising from running the station are been covered by sponsorship alone.  The financial support from sponsors has allowed the station to continue to be the voice of Ballina.

Taking its cue from community radio elsewhere, BCR101.9fm is a non-profit station that is volunteer led.  This year BCRFM is continuing their partnership with Mayo North East and its Tús initiative providing short-term working opportunities for unemployed people.  We continue to use our platform as a radio station to promote #shoplocal and #supportlocal.  This is reflected in our radio programming, for example, “In Focus”, our business show highlighting local business news with weekly interviews.  Our new show “Pure Ballina” is all things Ballina, “Match Day Live” brings live coverage of local matches and “Saturday Breeze” our light magazine show highlighting local news and events.

BCRFM’s shows are varied, playlist-free, advert free and most of its presenters are from the local area. The weekend schedule offers a mix of music shows including country, rock, soul, 50’s and 60’s, folk and blues, west of Ireland artists, classical plus a weekly chart show.  In the past year we have had a new injection of young presenters eager to learn the foundation skills of radio broadcasting.  They have and continue to be mentored by one of our dedicated and knowledgeable presenters.  One group have recently created a new sports show called “Matchday Live” with weekly interviews with prominent sporting personalities and have already amassed a large social media following.

Our popular book club programme “All Booked Up” returns with a monthly book club featuring a variety of reading recommendations and reviews presented by local author Lyndsey Gallagher. “Livin in Stereo” is a positive hour presented by Tara Rafter, the Navigation Coach chatting about life, coaching and playing the tunes. Val Robus, who is a well known blogger ‘magnumlady’ hosts “Val’s Afternoon Tea” a look at recent places she has travelled around the country with a mix of great music and chat.

BCRFM began broadcasting for the first time online in July 2014. The following year the station was awarded a 30 day FM license and again in 2017.  Our first 100 day licence was awarded in 2019 and again this year.  From our humble beginnings 7 years ago, we have grown as a station not only in terms of broadcasting but also in volunteer numbers.  This Volunteer Week, we would like to recognise our fantastic volunteers who have given so much of their time, expertise and passion for radio broadcasting.   As varied as the shows are so are the presenters behind the mic bringing their unique, fun and quirky personalities to the airwaves.

Be sure to turn the dial every weekend to 101.9fm from 9.30am right through to 11pm.
